Tap in time, build to the sky

A one-thumb rhythm game on a sunset grid. Notes run down three lanes toward the hit line, you tap them on the beat, and every clean hit pushes the heat meter up until the drums come back, the bass doubles and the whole track breaks open.
Did you like Beat Drop?
Beat Drop is a casual rhythm game with a synthwave soundtrack that is generated live rather than played back from a file. A small sequencer runs kick, snare, hats, bass, a pad and a lead arpeggio on a single clock, and the note chart is read straight off that lead voice, so the beat you tap is exactly the beat you hear. Three original tracks come with the game: Neon Curfew at 100 BPM, Chrome Tide at 118 and Tape Static at 132, each a little over a minute long.
Everything is one thumb. Notes slide down three lanes toward a hit line near the bottom of the screen, and you tap the left, middle or right third of the display as each one lands, or use A, S and D, the arrow keys, or the mouse. Long notes ask you to hold, and the game answers with a sustained tone while your finger stays down. Timing is graded Perfect, Great or Miss, and the closer you sit to the centre of the window the faster the combo counter climbs. A latency calibration screen on the title lets you tap along to a metronome and store the offset, so the judgement lines up with whatever headphones or Bluetooth speaker you are on.
The heat meter is the hook. Clean hits fill it and misses drain it, and the arrangement follows: let it slip and the drums thin out and the track hollows, keep it climbing and the hats, the snare and finally the full drop come back in with a sub layer under the bass. The screen answers as well, because the whole game is shot on a worn VHS tape: chromatic aberration splits the frame on a Perfect, block displacement tears it on a miss, scanlines roll when the drop lands, and a tape jam glitches the picture as your combo passes each milestone. A results card at the end gives you the score, the longest combo, the accuracy and a rank from S down to C in chrome type, and the marble bust that has been staring off down the grid all song finally turns to look at you if you take the S.
Before your first song in Beat Drop, open the latency calibration on the title screen and tap along to the metronome. It stores an offset so the timing judgement matches your headphones or speaker, so a tap that sounds right is also judged right.
Start with Neon Curfew at 100 BPM, the slowest of the three tracks, then move on to Chrome Tide at 118 and Tape Static at 132. Listen rather than only watching, because the notes are read straight off the lead voice, so the beat you hear is the beat you tap. Remember to keep your finger down on long notes until they finish.
The heat meter is what shapes each song. Clean hits fill it and misses drain it, and the music follows: slip and the drums thin out, keep it climbing and the full drop comes in. A steady run of hits matters more than chasing every Perfect, since a miss costs heat as well as combo. Aim for the centre of the timing window when you can, as that makes the combo counter climb faster, and if you are after the S rank, accuracy across the whole track is what counts.
Yes. Beat Drop is free to play in your browser on Kiloo. There is nothing to download and no account to create, and the music is generated live in the browser, so you can pick a track and start tapping straight away.
Yes. Beat Drop is built for one thumb: tap the left, middle or right third of the screen as each note reaches the hit line. On a computer you can use A, S and D, the arrow keys or the mouse.
There are three original synthwave tracks: Neon Curfew at 100 BPM, Chrome Tide at 118 and Tape Static at 132. Each one is a little over a minute long, and on a keyboard 1, 2 or 3 picks the track.

Easy to pick up, hard to put down.
