Did you like Word Search?
Word Search is the puzzle from the back of a holiday activity book, drawn as a sheet of cream graph paper on a sunny desk. The letters are printed in fat rounded ink, the margins fill with little doodles that follow the theme, and every word you find gets a chunky highlighter stroke in its own colour, wobbly edge and dry streaks included. Drag from the first letter to the last, let go, and the chip on the list below is struck through.
Pick a theme from forty-six of them — animals, ocean, space, kitchen, castle, desert, breakfast — and a size to suit your patience. Easy is eight by eight with words running only left to right and top to bottom. Normal adds diagonals. Hard and Expert fill twelve and fourteen squares and hide words in all eight directions, backwards included. Every grid is built by hand by the game: the words are threaded together with a backtracking placer, the gaps are filled with letters drawn from the puzzle's own alphabet so nothing stands out, and the whole sheet is checked until each word can be found in exactly one place.
A clock runs while you hunt and your best time for each size is kept in your browser, along with the run of days you have finished a puzzle. Three hints a page will pulse the first letter of a word you have not spotted. There is a puzzle of the day too, the same theme, size and grid for everyone on that date, and any seed can be replayed exactly. Play it with a finger, with a mouse, or entirely from the keyboard: the arrows walk a cursor around the grid, space starts and ends a selection, H asks for a hint and N turns the page.
Start on Easy in Word Search if you are new: on the eight by eight grid words only run left to right and top to bottom, so you can scan the rows and then the columns. Normal adds diagonals, and on Hard and Expert words hide in all eight directions, backwards included, so you need to check every way out from a letter.
Pick one word from the list at a time and look for its first letter, then check the letters around each one for the second. The filler letters are drawn from the puzzle's own alphabet, so a letter standing out on its own will not give a word away. Each word can be found in exactly one place, which means once you find it, you can move on. Save your three hints for the last stubborn words, since the clock keeps running while you hunt.
Each Word Search puzzle is a grid of letters with a list of words below it, and your goal is to find every word on the list hidden in the grid. Before you start, pick one of forty-six themes, such as animals, ocean or space, and one of four sizes. Easy is eight by eight with words running only left to right and top to bottom. Normal is ten by ten and adds diagonals. Hard and Expert are twelve by twelve and fourteen by fourteen, with words in all eight directions, backwards included.
When you spot a word, mark it from its first letter to its last. On a computer, click and drag across the letters with the mouse; on a phone or tablet, drag your finger. You can also walk a cursor round the grid with the arrow keys and press Space to start and end a selection. Let go on the right letters and the word gets a highlighter stroke in its own colour and is struck off the list. Each word can be found in exactly one place.
A clock runs while you search, and the page is done when the last word on the list has been found. If you are stuck, H uses one of your three hints for the page and makes the first letter of a word you have not found yet pulse. N turns the page for a new puzzle, P pauses and M mutes. Your best time for each size is kept in your browser.
Word search is one of the most familiar pencil puzzles, found in newspapers, magazines and activity books, and it asks for nothing more than a sharp eye and a little patience. Kiloo's Word Search keeps that feel. The grid is drawn as a sheet of cream graph paper with doodles in the margins that follow the theme, and every word you find gets a chunky highlighter stroke, as if you were marking it by hand.
It suits a wide range of players. The eight by eight grid with straight words is gentle enough for children and anyone new to the puzzle, while the fourteen by fourteen grid with words hidden in every direction asks for real care. Forty-six themes of everyday words keep the lists varied, and the game builds every grid itself, filling the gaps with letters from the puzzle's own alphabet so that no stray letter gives a word away. The puzzle of the day gives everyone the same theme, size and grid on that date, sticker badges mark your milestones, and you can play by touch, with a mouse or entirely from the keyboard.
