Sixty seconds, how many can you get?

A fox in aviator goggles floats over a summer fair, hanging from a bunch of glossy balloons. The word is strung across the sky as blank bunting. Every letter you get right flips a flag over; every letter you get wrong pops a balloon. Pop them all and the basket drifts gently back down to the grass.

Balloon Words is the old guessing game with the gloom taken out of it. Instead of a gallows there is a wicker basket, instead of a stick figure there is a cheerful fox in goggles, and instead of a hanging there is a soft landing in the daisies. Pick a category, or take the Mix, and the word appears as a line of blank flags on a rope of bunting. Tap a letter on the wooden board and every flag carrying it spins round to show its face. Tap a letter the word does not have and one balloon goes with a bang, the fox gulps, and the whole rig sinks a little lower in the sky.
There are six hundred and thirty words and short phrases across eighteen categories: animals, food, countries, cities, jobs, sports, space, ocean, music, school, weather, transport, garden, kitchen, holidays, colours, body and clothes. Everything is ordinary, everyday language a child would meet at school, and the phrases show their spaces as a gap in the bunting with a little ribbon tied at the break. Easy gives you eight balloons, Normal six and Hard just four, and two hints a round will hand you a vowel when you are truly stuck.
Play it three ways. Solo deals a fresh word whenever you want one and keeps a streak of wins that grows as long as you keep guessing. Daily gives everyone the same word for the day, once a day, with its own streak. Pass and play lets one person type a secret word or phrase into the phone, hide the screen and hand it over for the other to guess. Your best streaks are kept in your own browser, nowhere else. Letters guess, H takes a hint, N deals a new word, P pauses and M mutes the fair.
Balloon Words is the classic letter-guessing game, and the aim is to find the word before every balloon pops. Each wrong letter costs a balloon, while a right one turns over every flag that carries it, so common letters are a good way to start. Look at the length of the word and any gaps in the bunting, since phrases show their spaces with a little ribbon at the break, and use the category to narrow things down.
Keep your two hints for when you are truly stuck; each one hands you a vowel, which can open up the rest of the word. Start on Easy with eight balloons, then move to Normal with six and Hard with just four as you get better. Solo is the place to practise and build a winning streak, while Daily gives everyone the same word once a day, so take your time over it. With a friend, Pass and play lets one of you type in a secret word or phrase for the other to guess.
Yes. Balloon Words is free to play in your browser on Kiloo. There is nothing to download and no account to create; pick a category and start guessing. Your best streaks are kept in your own browser and nowhere else.
Yes. On a phone or tablet you tap letters on the wooden board to guess. On a computer you can type letters or click them, press H for a vowel hint, N for a new word, P to pause and M to mute.
Daily gives everyone the same word for the day, and you can play it once a day. It keeps its own streak, separate from the streak you build in Solo, which deals a fresh word whenever you want one.
There are 630 words and short phrases across eighteen categories, from animals and food to space, weather and clothes. All of them are everyday language a child would meet at school, and Mix takes words from every category at once.
