Zero gravity, full throttle

A side-on physics trials game set in three painted wooden yards. Throttle to climb, brake to stop, and shift your rider's weight fore and aft to keep the wheels where you want them — over stacked crates, across see-saw planks, along a raft of floating logs and out of a circus cannon.

Moto Trials is about one thing: where your weight is. The bike is a rigid frame on two sprung wheels, and everything you do goes through the rider sitting on top of it. Lean back and the front wheel lifts, the rear digs in and the bike will climb a wall of crates. Lean forward and the nose drops, the front tyre bites and a long drop stops being a crash. In the air the same two buttons rotate the whole machine, so a landing is something you set up a second before you get there. The suspension works visibly — the forks telescope, the rear shock compresses through its coil — and the throttle spins the back wheel exactly as hard as the surface under it allows. Painted wood holds; wet sawdust does not; a steel container roof lets go completely.
The tracks are hand-built out of things somebody stacked in a yard. The Stone Yard is orange rock and shipping containers, with staircases of crates, loose oil barrels that roll away the moment you touch them and half-buried pipes to bounce over. The Lumber Yard is sawdust underfoot, planks balanced on trestles that tip as you cross the middle, stacked timber to climb and a green pond you get over by riding a raft of floating logs that turn under the tyres. The Circus Back-Lot is striped canvas, bouncy tyres sunk into the sand, platforms swinging on ropes over a drop, and a cannon that fires you the length of the lot — hold the nose up on the way out and drop it again before the landing. Thirty tracks in all, ten to a yard, each one twenty seconds to a minute and a half depending on how long it takes you to stop crashing.
A run is timed from the gate to the chequered flag, and the helmet touching anything at all sends you back to the last checkpoint with the clock still running. Gold needs the target time and a clean run; silver allows a couple of falls; bronze just wants you to finish. A backflip or a frontflip off a big kicker takes a little time off the total, so the fastest line and the showiest line are not always the same one. Every track keeps your best time and a translucent ghost of that run, which rides beside you the next time you try to beat it. Arrow keys or WASD, R to restart, P to pause, M to mute; on a phone there are lean buttons under your left thumb and throttle and brake under your right. Times, medals and ghosts are stored on your own device.
Moto Trials is about where your rider's weight sits. Lean back to lift the front wheel and dig the rear in when you climb crates, and lean forward to drop the nose and make the front tyre bite on long drops. In the air the same lean buttons rotate the whole bike, so set up the landing a second before you reach the ground rather than at the last moment. Go gently on the throttle on slippery surfaces: the rear wheel only grips as much as the ground allows, and wet sawdust and steel container roofs hold far less than painted wood.
A crash costs time rather than the run, because the helmet touching anything sends you back to the last checkpoint with the clock still going. Gold needs the target time and a clean run, so learn a track at bronze pace first, where finishing is enough. Flips off big kickers take a little time off, but only try them once you are sure of the landing. Race your ghost to see where you are slow, and press R to restart.
Yes. Moto Trials is free to play in your browser on Kiloo. There is nothing to download and no account to create. Your times, medals and ghosts are stored on your own device.
Yes. On a phone the lean buttons sit under your left thumb and the throttle and brake under your right. On a computer, Up or W throttles, Down or S brakes, and Left and Right lean back and forward.
Each run is timed from the gate to the chequered flag. Gold needs the target time and a clean run, silver allows a couple of falls, and bronze only asks you to finish. Backflips and frontflips off big kickers take a little time off your total.
There are thirty tracks, ten in each of three yards: the Stone Yard, the Lumber Yard and the Circus Back-Lot. Each track takes between twenty seconds and a minute and a half, depending on how quickly you stop crashing.
Drift, dash and race to the line.

Zero gravity, full throttle

Listen to the notes, trust the slide

Crush the cars, nail the landing

Neon tunnels, no brakes

Three wheels, three laps, no manners

Slide every corner

Tuck, carve, send it

Items, drifts and eight karts

Full throttle through the harbour

Classic snake, Kiloo style

Blast the rocks, dodge the debris

Run, jump, slide, don't stop

Smash every brick

One tap. Don't hit anything.

Hold the line, wave after wave

Eat the maze, outrun the drones
Jump, slash and storm the castle

Wall-jump the neon skyline

Stay in the dark, steal the jewel
