A tug of war for two players on one screen. A power meter swings past a green sweet spot on each side, and only a press landed on the green really heaves — mash the button and your crew slips in the mud. Pull the flag over your line to take the round, best of five.
Did you like Tug Team?
Tug Team is a village fete tug of war for two people sharing one screen. Three chunky red foxes brace on the left, three blue bears dig in on the right, and a rope with a striped flag knotted at its middle runs between them. Under each crew a needle sweeps back and forth across a wooden meter. Press when the needle is on the green and your team heaves and the flag jumps your way; press on the gold sliver in the middle of the green and you get a proper HEAVE that shifts the rope a tenth of the pitch. Press anywhere else and your front fox skids forward with a puff of grass and hands ground back to the other side. There is a recovery beat after every pull, so hammering the button just keeps you locked out while the other crew reels you in. Timing beats mashing, every round.
Rounds are quick and they always finish. Nine seconds in, the marshals start walking the winning lines inwards, so a stalemate slowly turns into a lead that is good enough, and the sweet spot narrows as arms tire. Power-ups drift down onto the rope under little parachutes and are collected by whichever side drags the flag onto them: grease leaves the other crew scrabbling with a much smaller sweet spot, an anchor is driven into the turf behind your rear puller so you cannot be shifted for three seconds, and a splat of mud under the opposition's boots takes the strength out of their next few pulls. Everything lands with a grunt, a rope creak and a roar from the crowd on the banks.
Play two players on one screen — A or the left arrow for the foxes, L or the right arrow for the bears — or take on the computer on your own at Rookie, Regular or Ox. Ox finds the sweet spot nearly every time, so you will need a clean rhythm and a well-timed can of grease to beat it. On a phone the whole pitch turns a quarter so the handset can lie flat on the table between you, each player taps their own end, and the score pill at the far end is flipped to read the right way up. Match tallies are kept in the browser, so the foxes and the bears can settle a score over an afternoon.
Timing beats mashing in Tug Team, every time. Only a press while the needle is on the green really heaves, and a press on the gold sliver in the middle gives a full HEAVE that moves the rope much further. Press anywhere else and your crew slips and gives ground away, and because there is a recovery beat after every pull, hammering the button just locks you out while the other side pulls.
Watch the needle, wait for it, and press once. As a round goes on the sweet spot narrows, so you need to be more precise towards the end, and after nine seconds the winning lines start creeping inwards, so a small lead can be enough. Power-ups go to whichever side drags the flag onto them, so a well-timed pull can grab one: grease shrinks the other crew's sweet spot, an anchor stops you being shifted for three seconds, and mud weakens their next few pulls. Start solo against Rookie to learn the rhythm before trying Ox.
Yes. Tug Team is free to play in your browser on Kiloo. There is nothing to download and no account to create. Match tallies are kept in the browser, so you can keep a running score over an afternoon.
Yes. On a phone the pitch turns a quarter so the handset can lie flat on the table between two players, and each of you taps your own end. On a computer player one uses A or the left arrow and player two uses L or the right arrow.
Yes. Besides two players on one screen, you can take on the computer at Rookie, Regular or Ox, pulling with Space. Ox finds the sweet spot nearly every time, so you need a clean rhythm and well-timed power-ups to beat it.
Pull the flag over your line to take the round, and the match is best of five. Rounds always finish, because after nine seconds the winning lines creep inwards, so even a close stalemate turns into a win for one side.
Grab a friend, share the screen.

Close the box, go again

Bounce a shell, win the round

Flick, block, score

Bump, set, smash

Push your friend off the ring

Cut them off, don't get cut

Pick your corner, guess the dive

Aim, fire, topple the king

Bump, slide and grab the stars

Sixty seconds, how many can you get?

Solo or two players on one screen

Items, drifts and eight karts

Five dice, fifteen rounds

Race four tokens home

Race, hit, bear off

Match the pips, block the table

Guess the word before the balloons pop

Outflank, outthink, take the castle

Spears, boulders and tar against the dinosaurs
