Draw sprites, animate them, export them

Tap the pads to lay down a drum pattern, draw a bass line and a melody on the piano-roll strips, then turn the knobs until it sounds like yours. Four patterns chain into a song, eight kits change the whole mood in one press, and everything you make can be saved or exported as a WAV file.
Did you like Beat Maker?
Beat Maker is a sixteen-step groovebox drawn as a chunky piece of hardware: rubber pads that glow when they fire, rotary knobs with little position marks, a small green display counting the tempo, and a lit column that sweeps across the grid in time with the sound. Six drum lanes run down the front — kick, snare, closed hat, open hat, clap and percussion — each with its own colour, its own level and its own mute. Tap a pad to put a hit on that step; drag your finger across a row to paint a whole run of them.
Under the drums sit two piano-roll strips. The bass strip covers two octaves and the melody strip is locked to the scale you pick — major, minor, pentatonic or blues — so whatever you draw stays in key. Notes can run from one to four steps, and the chord button stacks a triad on every note you place. Five synth voices cover both strips: a round sub, a detuned saw, a short pluck, a glassy bell and a hollow square. Every drum kit is synthesised too, from the deep 808 box and a dry techno machine to lo-fi tape, an eight-bit chip set, jazz brushes, tropical percussion and orchestral hits. Nothing is sampled; the box builds every sound as you press it.
Four patterns, A to D, chain into a song in any order you like. Tempo runs from 60 to 180, swing pushes the off-beats late, and a filter, a tempo-synced delay and a plate reverb sit on the master along with a compressor that keeps the level honest. Eight live pads let you play over the top while the loop runs, snapped to the beat or loose. Six built-in tracks show what the box can do, your own are kept in your browser, and Export writes the whole chained song out as a WAV file you can keep. It plays with a mouse, with a keyboard — space starts it, arrows move a cursor, the number keys hit the live pads — or with two thumbs on a phone.
Build a track in layers. Start with the drums: put a kick on a few steps, add a snare or a clap, then fill in the hats, and use each lane's level and mute to hear what every part is doing. Dragging across a row paints a run of hits quickly. Once the drums loop well, add a bass line and then a melody. The melody strip is locked to the scale you choose, so pick major, minor, pentatonic or blues first and every note you draw stays in key; the chord button turns single notes into triads.
Change one thing at a time. Swing pushes the off-beats late, and the filter, delay and reverb on the master change the feel without touching the notes. Pressing K to try another kit is a quick way to hear the same pattern in a new mood. When pattern A works, build variations in B, C and D and chain them into a song. If you are unsure where to begin, open one of the six built-in tracks and see how it is put together.
Yes. Beat Maker is free to play in your browser on Kiloo, with nothing to download and no account to create. Your own tracks are kept in your browser, and you can export a song as a WAV file to keep.
Yes. You can play it with two thumbs on a phone: tap a step to toggle it or drag across a row to paint it. On a computer, Space plays, the arrows move a cursor, Enter toggles a step and 1 to 8 hit the live pads.
Yes. Export writes the whole chained song out as a WAV file you can keep. Arrange your four patterns, A to D, in the order you want before you export, because the file covers the song as it is chained.
No. Nothing is sampled: every sound is synthesised as you press it. That includes all eight drum kits, from the 808 box and the dry techno machine to jazz brushes and orchestral hits, and the five synth voices on the bass and melody strips.
