Note Catcher

Note Catcher is a music game where the song falls from the sky. Notes drop out of the clouds in five lanes, one lane for each pitch from low on the left to high on the right, and your catcher holds a big basket over their head at the bottom of the screen. Slide under a note as it reaches the basket and it plays that note of the melody, so a clean run sings the whole tune. Golden notes score double, grey rests are gaps to let fall past, and a dropped note only costs your combo: the song always plays on to the end.

There are twenty-four original songs in four styles, each a quick tune of under a minute: folk and classical in a sunny meadow, jazz and electro under a night sky, with the tempo and the number of notes rising as you go. Every song has a par score, three stars and your best score saved on your device, and the first song teaches the controls as you play. Once you have the rhythm, try Note Storm, an endless mode where the tempo climbs every four bars and the style changes as it goes, with a high score to chase until eight notes slip past.

All of the music, melody, bass, chords and light drums, is synthesised in your browser. Notes show up two bars ahead, faint beat lines fall with them and the ground pulses on every beat, so the game plays just as fairly with the sound off. A tap-along calibration screen measures the delay of your device and remembers it. Pick one of six catchers: Bruno the bear, Fern the fox, Fizz the frog, Miso the cat, Poppy the bunny or Bao the panda. Use the arrow keys or A and D, click a lane, or drag and tap on a touch screen. P pauses, M mutes.

Tips for Note Catcher

Note Catcher sorts the notes into five lanes from low to high, so think in lanes rather than chasing each note. Notes appear two bars ahead, so as soon as you catch one, look up and start moving towards the next. On a keyboard, the keys 1 to 5 jump straight to a lane, which is quicker than stepping across with the arrows when a tune leaps from low to high. Golden notes score double, so they are worth a stretch, but grey rests are gaps to let fall past.

The first song teaches the controls as you play, and the songs get faster and busier as you go, so work through them in order. Aim for par first and come back for three stars. A dropped note only costs your combo and the song plays on, so do not panic after a slip. If catches feel slightly off, run the tap-along calibration. Note Storm ends once eight notes slip past, so there every catch counts for more than in the songs.

Frequently asked questions

Is Note Catcher free to play?

Yes. Note Catcher is free to play in your browser on Kiloo. There is nothing to download and no account to create, all the music is synthesised in the browser, and your best scores are saved on your device.

Can I play Note Catcher on my phone?

Yes. On a phone or tablet you drag the catcher, or tap a lane to the left or right of it. On a computer you use the arrow keys or A and D, press 1 to 5 to jump to a lane, or click a lane with the mouse.

What are golden notes and grey rests?

Golden notes score double, so they are worth catching. Grey rests are gaps in the melody that you let fall past rather than catch. Every note you catch plays the next note of the tune, so a clean run sings the whole song.

Which catchers can I choose in Note Catcher?

There are six catchers to pick from: Bruno the bear, Fern the fox, Fizz the frog, Miso the cat, Poppy the bunny and Bao the panda. Each one holds a big basket over their head at the bottom of the screen.
