What are music and rhythm games

In a rhythm game the song is the level. Keys, blocks, arrows or notes travel towards a line in time with the music, and you press, tap or hold at the moment they arrive. Hit them on the beat and you score more and build a combo; miss one and the combo resets, but the song carries on. The fun is the feeling of locking in with the beat, and the way a clean run sounds as good as it looks.

The music games on Kiloo are built so that you play the tune yourself. In most of them every hit plays the next note of the melody over bass, chords and drums, so getting the timing right is what makes the song sound like a song. All the music is original and is made in your browser while you play rather than loaded from a file. Most have a set of songs or levels with a best score to beat and an endless mode that keeps getting faster, and in the lane games a miss never stops the song early.

Music games to start with

The gentlest start is Xylo Quest, where a songbird sings a short tune on eight rainbow bars and you play it back, one note longer each round, on a journey from Whistle Forest to Lullaby Moon. A wrong note just means hearing it again. Melody Maker is a music puzzle: thirty Echo puzzles play a loop and you rebuild it by ear on a grid, and the Free studio lets you make your own loops with a scale that has no wrong notes.

For classic falling-note play, Key Cascade sends black piano keys down four columns and Beat Blocks runs coloured blocks down a four-lane highway into a cartoon city, each with twenty-four original songs. Guitar Groove asks you to hold the right chord buttons and strum as each chord reaches the line, and Drum Kit has a cartoon band play a one-bar beat for you to play back on kick, snare, hi-hat and tom.

If you like to move, Rhythm Runner and Beat Bounce turn the beat into a course: you jump and slide over obstacles that sit on the drum hits, or bounce a ball where every landing is the next note. Note Catcher has you slide a basket under notes falling in five lanes, and Dance Floor turns every arrow you hit into a step, a spin or a clap for your dancer, with room for two players side by side.

Sound, timing and controls

These games are made to be heard, so play with the sound on. On a phone or tablet, headphones help: you hear the beat clearly and the notes you play land right in your ears. If your taps feel late, which can happen with wireless headphones or some speakers, use the tap-along calibration in Beat Blocks, Guitar Groove, Rhythm Runner, Note Catcher or Beat Bounce. If you have to play muted, the games still work, with lights, markers and arrows that show the beat ahead of time.

On a keyboard, D, F, J and K play the four lanes in Key Cascade, Beat Blocks and Drum Kit, Space jumps in Rhythm Runner and taps in Beat Bounce, and the arrow keys dance in Dance Floor. On a touch screen you tap the lanes or pads, keep your finger down on long notes and, in Guitar Groove, hold the chord buttons on the left while you tap or swipe the strum zone. P pauses and M mutes everywhere. Start with the early songs, which are slower: in Rhythm Runner the first one, at 88 BPM, teaches the moves.

Frequently asked questions

Are the music games on Kiloo free?

Yes. Every music and rhythm game on Kiloo is free to play in your browser. There is nothing to download or install and no account needed. The songs are made in the browser as you play, and your stars and best scores are kept in the browser you play in, on that device.

Can I play music games on my phone or tablet?

Yes, all ten music games work on phones and tablets as well as on computers. You tap the lanes, pads or bars on the screen and hold your finger down on long notes. Headphones make the beat easier to follow, and the calibration screens help if your taps feel late.

Which music game should I start with?

Xylo Quest is the gentlest, with kind timing and no fail state. If you want a classic rhythm game, start with Key Cascade or Beat Blocks on their first songs. Melody Maker suits you if you would rather make music or solve puzzles by ear than react quickly.

Do I need the sound on to play?

The games are best with the sound on, because every hit plays a note and the music tells you when the next one is coming. They still work muted: the floor lights on the beat in Dance Floor, obstacles show two bars ahead in Rhythm Runner, and beat markers guide you in Beat Bounce.

Can two people play on one device?

Yes, in Dance Floor. Two players dance side by side on one screen, one on the arrow keys and one on W, A, S and D, or on two sets of pads with a tablet or phone held sideways. The other music games are for one player at a time.
